Top Ten Tuesday: Popular Authors I've Never Read

This week's topic was sort of easy and yet not... There are definitely some popular authors I've never read, and then there are some that I think are probably popular, but I don't really know.

1. J.K. Rowling
If you know me well, this makes sense.  I wasn't allowed to read Harry Potter when I was younger, and I'm still not a fan of witchcraft, so I doubt I'll ever read Harry Potter.

2. Sarah Dessen
Well, technically, I've read part of one of her books.  But I just couldn't get into it, and I've heard that the formula for her novels is pretty much the same.

3. Susane Colasanti
I paged through one of her novels at Barnes & Noble once, but it just seemed weird and all over the place.  Characters' actions were inconsistent, and, anyways, I'm not a fan of most YA contemporary romances.

4. Cassandra Clare
Paranormal is definitely not my thing, so, no thank you.

5. Veronica Rossi
*ducks* I think the book blogging community might throw tomatoes at me for this one.  I honestly have no interest in the Under the Never Sky trilogy.

6. David Levithan
I've heard a lot about his books, but, to be honest, they don't sound like my cup of tea.  Plus, I don't read a lot of co-authored stuff.

7. Ransom Riggs
A lot of people seem to like Miss Peregrine, but it doesn't seem like something I'd enjoy.

8. Libba Bray
The Diviners sounds like I'd have the same objections I have to Harry Potter, and then the synopses for her other books just sound too...weird for me.

9. Meg Cabot
I can hear your gasps.  I love The Princess Diaries movies, but I'm doubtful I'd enjoy the books or perhaps anything else she's written.

10. J.R.R. Tolkien
Yup, that's right.  I've never read Lord of the Rings.  But here's how this author differs from the rest on this list.  I plan to get to LotR at some point (hopefully in the near future), and I hope I'll like it.

  1. I've never read any Tolkien either--I've tried The Hobbit a couple of times, but I'm just not into that particular genre. Glad I'm not the only one! :-)

  2. Haven't read several of these either:)
I read City of Bones by Cassandra Clare but it was just ok.

  3. *Gasps* I think you should try the Princess Diaries. I really enjoyed the first couple, but as you keep going it kind of gets worse. Also, the Hobbit was my favorite book for a long time. Even if you don't think you're up to ready LOTR yet, the Hobbit is much shorter and has the same amazing story type.

  4. I am certain you'll like LOTR.
The rest, I haven't read either and half of them I don't even know.

  5. Nooooo! You have to read LotR! It might take a while to get into them but the second time you read them, you will probably love them.
I read part of the first Princess Diaries book, I never really got into them. For one thing I was about ten and my mom said I shouldn't read them. I did watch the movies recently and I loved them. Nothing beats Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews.

  6. I haven't read J K Rowling, J R R Toliken, Ransom Riggs, Susan Colasanti or David Levithan either. I'm just not sure if I would enjoy them. I read the first City of Bones book by Clare and I just didn't like it all that much, she uses way too many details for my taste.

  7. In my opinion city of bones was really good and I think you might like it but the rest of the series sort of falls apart and is really repetitive. I think based on your other reviews though that you might really like Ransom Riggs. It might be a little out of your comfort zone but I think you should give it a try. I agree with almost all your book opinions and I loved it!

  8. I haven't read J. K. Rowling's books, either! Thought I wouldn't read her name on many peoples lists today. I might read Harry Potter, eventually, but there is a lot of pressure with reading it now. The only authors I have read a book by before on your list are Sarah Dessen (Read one, like it, but don't want to read her others, esp. because I have heard there is a fair amount of content in them.) and Meg Cabot (Read one of her MG books awhile ago.). I tried a book by Susanne Colasanti before, but I didn't really like it, but I know A LOT of people love her books, it must have been just me. I would like to try Under the Never Sky, eventually! :)

  9. Not allowed to read Harry Potter? But that's sacrilege! Although if you are not a fan of witchcraft then it definitely isn't for you! Happy to see I am not the only one who hasn't read Lord of the Rings yet.

  10. I've read one Rowling for a Libs course, and while it was interesting - it wasn't my cup of tea either. The only other author I have read on this list is Tolkien - who I adore!!! He was just a genius.

  11. Oh my gosh, I wasn't allowed to read Harry Potter as a kid and therefore, JK Rowling is on my list as well. I do plan on reading it though. I just feel like it's one of those classics that I must read before I die.

Also, you should think about giving Under the Never Sky a try. One of my favorite dystopian series. Veronica Rossi is amazing!

  12. Miss Peregrine was good, but gorier and more serious than I expected.

I tried reading The Lord of the Rings in high school, but I just couldn't stand it. The Hobbit was okay, but I prefer other fantasy writers over Tolkien.

Here's my TTT for the week. Happy reading!

  14. I haven't read most of these authors, either! I did read a Sarah Dessen book before we went to ATBF last year since she was there. (I didn't enjoy it.) I started a David Levithan (Girl Parts) and ended up putting it down due to content. I LOVED Meg Cabot growing up. I enjoyed her Mediator and 1800-Where-Are-You series, along with some of her cute stand-alone novels. I read like 8 of The Princess Diaries books (I'm not sure why I even read that far), and stopped when the evil grandmother (yes, evil, with tattooed eyebrows) gave a room key to Mia on prom night for her and Michael. I assure you you're missing nothing. Just keep on watching the movies.
